Safe Space"

Fulbright Scholarship

"When the word "Home" is not just a place, but a "Safe Space"

A conversation with Chanyanuch Aiemruksa (Proud) about the work 'Re:Imagine Safe Space'—when AI doesn't act as a replacement for human thought, but invites us to rediscover ourselves through the design of experiences and safe spaces.

When we talk about "home," many people might think of floor area, location, or interior design style. But if you try closing your eyes and thinking about your own home, the first things that pop into your memory might not be the walls or furniture, but perhaps the morning sunlight, the sound of rain hitting the roof, the smell of food from the kitchen, or a small corner where you like to sit quietly after a tiring day. Therefore, home is not just a "place," but a "feeling" and an "experience" that occurs between people and that space.

This concept is the starting point of 'Re:Imagine Safe Space', a project by Chanyanuch Aiemruksa (Proud), an Interaction Designer and Creative Technologist who graduated from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University (NYU) as a Fulbright Scholar. This work doesn't ask how beautiful an image AI can create, but instead asks a different question:

"Can AI help humans understand themselves more?"

"Safe Space"

Re:Imagine Safe Space

Everyone's "Safe Space" is never the same.

Interviewer: What was the beginning of Re:Imagine Safe Space?
Proud: The beginning happened when I moved from Bangkok to New York. Everything around me changed; there was no home, no family, no familiar places. That period made me ask myself, "What is it that makes me feel safe when everything around me is different?" Eventually, I found that the feeling of safety didn't come from just one place, but from small details that we might have never noticed—whether it's the light at a certain time of day, the texture of materials, the scent of nature, seeing trees, or having a small corner where we can truly be ourselves.

Safe Space"

A good home starts from feelings, not floor plans.

Interviewer: Why did you choose to talk about the term "Safe Space"?
Proud: Because "Safe Space" doesn't look the same for everyone. Some feel safe when they are by the sea. Some prefer a small room with warm light. Some need to have plants. Some need to hear the sound of rain. So, I didn't want to build a space that says, "This is a Safe Space," but rather create a system that allows each person to discover their own answer. In reality, when we design a home, we might start from the same question. It’s not "What should a beautiful home look like?" But rather, "When you walk into your home, how do you want to feel?"

When AI doesn't answer questions, but listens through touch.

Most AI today starts with typing a prompt, but 'Re:Imagine Safe Space' chooses a different approach. Participants pick up small white objects—whether it's a house, bed, sofa, lamp, or tree—and place them on the table. Each piece is designed to have a different tactile surface; some are covered in cotton, some use felt, and some intentionally retain the texture of 3D printing. Even though all the objects are white, users perceive the differences through their "hands" rather than their eyes. When an object is placed on the table, an RFID system detects the chosen elements before sending the data to Generative AI to interpret and create a virtual space through light, color, sound, and moving images.

"We use our hands to think before using words."

Interviewer: Why did you change from typing prompts to using physical objects?
Proud: Because many times, we understand ourselves through touch before we can explain it in words. Many memories are not in language, but in the body. We might remember the feeling of touching a blanket, sitting on a favorite sofa, or walking under trees more clearly than the images of those things. So, I wanted people to use their "hands" to think, just as much as they use their eyes. From the beginning, I didn't want people to communicate with AI through typing text, because I felt that an issue like 'Safe Space' is delicate and more about feelings than can be fully explained in words. Through research, I found that many people associate feelings of safety with objects in their home—whether it's a bed, sofa, tree, or small items that have meaning to them. Therefore, I designed it so users can reflect on themselves through the process of choosing objects: which ones should be in their safe space, and which ones shouldn't. Because for me, the process of choosing and questioning oneself is the heart of this experience, more so than the image the AI generates at the end.

AI doesn't create space for us, but creates it with us.

Interviewer: What role does AI play in this work?
Proud: AI doesn't dictate what a Safe Space should look like, but acts to interpret what the user communicates through the selection and placement of objects. I don't see AI as a tool that generates an answer, but as a "Creative Collaborator" that helps open a dialogue between a human and themselves.

Healing Home

The most surprising thing is not the AI.

Interviewer: During the exhibition, what was the most surprising thing?
Proud: Many people hardly mentioned the AI at all; instead, they told their own stories—why they chose the tree, why they chose the sofa, why they chose the house. The conversation gradually shifted from technology to stories of life, memories, and feelings. I think that is what is most important.

Healing Home: A home designed from feelings.

"Nowadays, we spend time choosing a home based on location, price, or number of rooms, but sometimes, we might forget to ask a more important question: 'How does this home make me feel?'"
Feelings of calm might come from natural light, trees at the window, the sound of water, the wind blowing through, or even the pictures hanging on the wall. During user interviews, I found that many people associate feelings of safety with certain "images"—whether it's the sea, mountains, a childhood home, or pets. These images might just be decorations for others, but for the homeowner, they are memories and are elements that help heal the mind each day. This is another perspective of a "Healthy Home" or "Healing Home" that doesn't start from choosing furniture, but starts from understanding the identity and experiences of the resident.

AI and the future of homes.

Interviewer: How do you see the future of AI?
Proud: I don't want AI to choose everything for humans; I want AI to be a tool that helps people understand themselves more. This same concept can be extended to the design of therapy spaces, education, museums, interior design, or even choosing a home. Ultimately, the decision to choose a residence doesn't depend on data alone, but relates to people's memories, emotions, and feelings.

Beyond a Smart Home, it's a home that understands people.

'Re:Imagine Safe Space' invites us to look at the role of technology in another dimension. Instead of asking what AI can do for us......perhaps it's time we ask, "How can AI help us understand ourselves more?"  Just like home design, the best home might not be the one with the most technology, but the one that makes us feel safe, allows us to rest our hearts, and lets us be our true selves.

"Because in the end, a Safe Space is not a place, but an experience—a feeling that occurs between people and objects, spaces, locations, the environment, and the mind."
